Moving in Zurich

Zurich is a city of hills and narrow lanes: a flat on the Zürichberg or in the old town often means a steep approach or a parking zone that has to be cleared in advance. Comparing several quotes quickly shows which company actually knows those addresses and which is just naming the average price.

In Zurich a move depends on two things: the date and the access. The city moves in waves. Most tenancies end on the customary notice dates at the end of March and the end of September, and around those days moving companies, vans and cleaning teams are taken weeks in advance.

Access is the second matter. On the Zürichberg, in Höngg or Wollishofen the roads climb steeply, in the Niederdorf and parts of districts 4 and 5 the lanes are narrow, and almost everywhere vans share the street with the tram. A parking space outside the house in the blue zone is a matter of luck. If you state the floor, the lift and the way from the vehicle to the flat door precisely, you get quotes that still hold on moving day.

What does a move in Zurich cost?

For a move within Zurich you should generally expect around 900 to 2,800 francs. A room or a studio is at the lower end, a family flat over several floors with assembly at the upper end. These are guide values, not fixed prices: what your move costs is only settled in the quote.

What moves the price:

  • the volume, meaning how much furniture and how many boxes are actually coming
  • floor and lift at both addresses
  • the carrying distance, especially with steep approaches and old-town addresses
  • extras such as dismantling and assembly, packing or a furniture lift
  • the date: the end of March and the end of September cost the most

Parking on moving day

For the van to stop outside the door, many districts need temporary no-parking signs. They are applied for at the city police (Stadtpolizei). Allow one to two weeks. Many moving companies take care of the permit and the signs for a surcharge. Have the item shown in the quote.

Handing over the flat and the final clean

In Switzerland, handing back the old flat includes a thorough final clean, and property managers are exacting about it. Many moving companies offer the cleaning with a handover guarantee as well. That saves a second appointment and means somebody is present at the handover to put right anything that is objected to. Ask about it in your request.

The best time

If you can choose the date freely, move outside the big moving dates and on a weekday. That is cheaper and easier to get. If your move falls at the end of March or the end of September, ask as early as possible, ideally two to three months ahead.

Step-01

Tell us about your move

Where you are moving from and to, when, and roughly what is coming with you. It takes about two minutes, it costs nothing, and you are not committed to anything at the end of it.

Step-02

We pass your request on to suitable movers

Every request is read by a person before it goes anywhere. It then reaches the companies whose service area covers your pick-up address — you do not have to find them or ring round.

Step-03

Quotes come back to you

Each one arrives by email with a link to your own page. Compare the prices, read what each company says it includes, and ask them anything before you decide.

Moving in Zurich: the usual questions

The customary dates are the end of March and the end of September. Around those days moving companies are very busy and dearer. If you can, pick another day or ask very early.

In many districts, yes. Temporary no-parking signs are applied for at the city police. Allow one to two weeks, or have the moving company see to it.

Many do, often with a handover guarantee. Say in your request that you want the move and the cleaning together, and you will see both in one quote.

There is no one figure, which is the reason this page exists. The price turns on the distance, the floor, whether a lift is involved and how much is coming with you — and moving companies weigh those differently. Asking several movers covering Zurich at once is the only way to see the spread for your own move, and it costs nothing.

Four to six weeks is comfortable, and the end of a month is the busy part everywhere, Zurich included. If your date is fixed and close, say so in the request: a company that cannot make it will tell you quickly, which is worth knowing early.

Yes. Each company sets the area it covers, and your request reaches the ones whose area includes your move-out address in Zurich — whether you are moving across town or to the other end of the country.
